Science

At Buckton Vale, we recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life and aim to foster the children to value the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. Science learning prioritises increasing pupils’ substantive knowledge and understanding of our world through the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics; together with developing disciplinary knowledge/skills for the process of scientific enquiry. We aim to develop the natural curiosity of our children, the confidence to ask questions about science and the world around them, a respect for living things and the environment, and critically evaluate evidence presented to them or gathered through their own enquiries.

At Buckton Vale we are committed to ensuring the effective delivery of the Science National Curriculum as a core subject to all pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. In EYFS, we provide opportunities for pupils to work towards the Development Matters statements and the Early Learning Goals. To ensure high quality teaching and learning in science, staff use the PLAN materials as a basis for teacher planning and assessment. This gives clear beginning and end points for each science unit and Working Scientifically to ensure progression, addresses common misconceptions and outlines vocabulary and possible teaching and assessment opportunities.

We are very proud to have achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) Gilt Award. The Primary Science Quality Mark is led by the University of Hertfordshire in collaboration with the Primary Science Teaching Trust and this award recognises Buckton Vale’s commitment to science teaching and learning, together with the high profile and quality of science in the school. Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure scientific understanding and skills.
